Within easy travelling distance of Quintinha dos Cedros there are many attractions and much to see and do.
Penela, with it’s historic castle and churches, has all the necessary facilities, including supermarkets, banks, a post office, shops and restaurants. Free internet access is available in the modern library. In the mountains close to the town, at Louçainha, there is a fresh water outdoor swimming pool (Praia Fluvial).
Coimbra, is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. The old medieval town and the old University buildings are well worth exploring and there are frequent open top bus tours and river trips. The city boasts several good shopping malls the newest of which (the Forum Centre) has superb views of the city.
Tomar. Dominated by the Convento de Cristo, the Portuguese headquarters of the Knights Templar, Tomar is a cosmopolitan city with many boutique type shops and good quality restaurants. A visit to the Convento de Cristo is highly recommended.
Batalha. Portugal’s ‘Battle Abbey’ built to commemorate the Portuguese victory over the Castillians in 1385. The monastry is a stunning example of filigree stonework. Ornate archways lead to magical chapels and chambers. The Monastery also houses the Tombs of the Unknown Warriors from the First World War with the changing of the guard taking place every hour.
Conimbriga. The largest excavated Roman ruins in Portugal is situated on the outskirts of Condexia, about twenty minutes drive from the house.
Aveiro. The Venice of Portugal with it’s many canals. The home of ‘Vista Alegre’ fine chinaware. Nearby, on the coast, at Costa Nova, the old fishermens’ houses are painted with ‘candy stripe’ colours so that the fishermen could recognise their houses in foggy conditions.
Figueira de Foz, the closest seaside town to Quintinha dos Cedros is less than an hours drive away. Figueira boasts a large, immaculate beach. The town has many interesting ‘Art Deco’ buildings.
